You can tell from the smile on my face that the Georgia On My Mind evening at the Ryman was something very special. In this picture, I am holding the Flamekeeper Award they presented to me in recognition of my efforts in promoting Georgia music over the years. My home state has produced a lot of great music in every genre imaginable, and this honor is extremely meaningful to me. I had a chance to visit with my fellow Georgian, singer John Berry, at a reception held prior to the evening’s entertainment. John and I have amazingly similar backgrounds in that we were both born in South Carolina but moved to Georgia at an early age. We were a few years apart, but John grew up one street over from where I grew up in Decatur. We both, of course, eventually moved to Nashville to pursue careers in music. He has been fighting a battle with throat cancer in recent months, but the way he sang that night you’d have never known he had any problems. All of us are keeping John in our thoughts and prayers. The bottom picture here shows Vince Gill almost falling out of his chair laughing at something somebody said during our recent show at the Bluebird Cafe. Knowing Vinny, he was probably cracking up at one of his own stories!
