I arrived in Maine just ahead of the fall color extravaganza, but you can see from the first picture that some of the leaves had already turned. To me there’s few things prettier than Maine in the fall. The weather was still warm enough, though, to go out onto the waters of Penobscot Bay with my longtime friends, Wallace and Alice Alston. Wallace had just gotten his new boat, the Vital Spark, and lunch on the aft deck was sensational. Before leaving for Maine, another longtime friend from the world of baseball, Jerry Martin, came to Nashville for his first visit to the Opry. Jerry, who played in the major leagues for the Phillies, Cubs, Giants, Royals, and Mets, brought me a custom made Louisville Slugger bat just like the ones he used in the bigs. Jerry and I are both originally from Columbia, South Carolina, so we had a lot of hometown stories to share. My friendship with the Alstons and with Jerry proves the beauty in friendships that have lasted for many years. There’s nothing like them.
