Well, for those of you who weren’t by your radios last night, we held our big fan club drawing for a free Grand Ole Opry cruise over WSM, and it was “live radio” at its finest.
The winner turned out to be a twelve-year old girl from South Carolina named Emily Gantt. When we tried to call and give her the big news, though, we couldn’t get her on the phone because her area code had been changed. When we finally did get through, she squealed with delight when she learned she had won…until her mom reminded her that the dates for the cruise overlapped with a school trip to Washington, D.C. for the Presidential Inauguration. I could tell on the phone she hated to turn down our trip, but I assured her that she (and her mom) definitely made the right choice.
So, we drew again. The winner this time was Shirley Smith from New Madison, Ohio. After we finally convinced her it wasn’t a prank, I think she got pretty excited. However, we had some telephone difficulties with her too, and it resulted in our being disconnected. At that point I think Shirley thought for sure someone was playing a joke on her. Our fan club president, Jean Brown, spoke with her later, however, and convinced her that everything was on the level. Shirley plans to take her husband, and here’s hoping they have the best time ever!
To those of you who joined the club or renewed your dues in order to be eligible for the drawing, many thanks. I hope you’ll enjoy your membership with us and will stay around for many years (and hopefully many more drawings) to come. And to my buddy, Eddie Stubbs, thanks so much for allowing us to use your valuable air time to draw for the winner. You are a real pro and it shows in all that you say and do.
Before I go, let me thank you once again for all the birthday greetings, both e-mail and otherwise. My new assistant, Judy, was shocked at how many cards came to the office. I keep telling her I’ve got the greatest fans in the world. Keep this up and she’ll start to believe me.
Smooth sailing to you all and thanks for everything,
