Before we head out on our trip to Montana and western Canada, I thought you might enjoy reading a few of the comments that I received in response to my question as to whether or not you thought I should try playing a game or two of Senior Baseball later this year.
Again, I can’t believe the hundreds of responses you sent to me, most of which were in favor of my giving it a try. Funny, but opinion seemed to be split between women and men. Most men said, “Go for it,” while a large number of women expressed fear that I might get hurt. Sort of like my mom and dad when I first wanted to try out for my high school football team!
Some of my favorite e-mails included:
“You appear to be in good shape on TV, but send me a few pictures of yourself…one in a swimsuit and one or two in a t-shirt and shorts. Please notice how cleverly I worked this into the conversation.” As you might suspect, that one came from a female.
“Don’t worry,” wrote another, “the other players will all be seniors too.” True.
“Sounds like a ‘Wild Weekend’ full of “Peanuts & Diamonds’,” said another, obviously a fan of some of my older music.
Other comments included:
“Be sure you use a bat and not a guitar.”
“Do the umpires sit in wheelchairs?”
“Can you tape it and put it on a DVD for your fans?”
“Go for it. You’ll always wonder what if.” And in a similar vein, “You have never backed down from a challenge. Gonna start now? Not the Bill that I know!”
A disc jockey buddy of mine wrote: “In the immortal words of Clint Eastwood, ‘a man must know his limitations’. However, should you not, may I suggest the following: Ensure, Geritol, Ben-Gay, Aleve, and plenty of bed rest!”
A fan from New England wrote, “You’d be a lot better than some of the Red Sox players.”
And another asked: “Don’t they make pads for that sort of thing?”
And perhaps my favorite: “What if your spirit is willing but your body refuses to go along?”
I’ve got all kinds of answers for that one, but I’ll leave them to your imagination!
See you when we get back.
Yes, ma’m, I guess they do. And if I’m able to work a game or two into my schedule, I’ll use all the padding I can find, believe me.
